Family and life-stage-friendly personnel policies
The “berufundfamilie gemeinnützige GmbH”, which is part of the Hertie Foundation, has awarded the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) the “audit berufundfamilie” certificate for 2020 for the fifth time in a row due to its progressive personnel policies. As such, HZG has reached a stage of development at which the topic has become an important part of corporate culture.

The auditing process
Following a description of the status quo and a self-assessment as to the level of development, managers and staff representatives worked on proposals aimed at further developing family and life-stage-friendly personnel policies as part of a dialogue day with the auditor under the direction of the Human Resources department.
The final approval of a written target agreement with the management results in a concrete action plan for the years ahead. It is a prerequisite for confirmation of the certificate.
These re-audits confirm the certificate every three years once the foundation has reviewed the current progress. At the same time, the Human Resources department strategically develops the measures that allow for this positive work-life balance.
Measures implemented so far
HZG has been certificated since 2008
Flexible working hours, part-time models, the option of mobile working, a company kindergarten at the Geesthacht site and children's holiday camps, emergency childcare, dual career service, elder care and psychosocial counselling, as well as a Welcome Office and the introduction of a company health management system:
at the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht, equal opportunities and the compatibility of work, research, and private life have a long tradition.
Personnel policies with a focus on the different phases of life will be continued on an ongoing basis. Strengthening the methodological competence of managers and further developing modern forms of work for all employees are also among the goals for the coming years.
